The Nurses' Memorial Foundation of SA Inc set up a Trust in 1989 to assist in building work at Leahurst Home for Aged Trained Nurses a residential home specifically designed for older retired nurses to live out their days. Leahurst is situated at 502 Magill Road Magill. The Trust was registered on 31st August 1989. Leahurst was first Incorporated in 1953 as Manoah Home for retired Trained Nurses Inc. Its rules were amended in 1953 and 1958 and its name changed to Leahurst in that time. Additional rules were registered in 1954 and remain unchanged since that date. Leahurst Home for Aged Trained Nurses was officially opened on 21st February 1958 by Lady George. Funding for the home was initially raised by nurses their families and friends hospitals and nursing associations as well as receiving government funding. Leahurst provided a home for nurses who had worked and lived in a hospital environment most of their lives having earned very little and often had no home or family to live with once they retired. It also offered an extension of care for nurses. Gradually over the years Nurses' Homes closed and married nurses came into the field of nursing also. Training changed from hospital based to university or TAFE education with various field placements. Beds were no longer filled by nurses only and the aged care facility eventually became open to the public. Priority is given to retired nurses. Leahurst provides low level care for 18 residents and is a not for profit stand alone facility managed by a Board of Management.
